What's your intention? đ€
We went to the local town fair this weekend and ran into a few acquaintances who we hadnât seen for a while.
We got talking about my lifestyle, which involves a lot of travelling (weâre going to Canada on Saturday as part of a home exchange for two weeks), and people kept saying âOh, it sounds really amazing, would be great to do something similarâŠâ
And I said to them: âYou know what it takes in order to be able to do that? Intentionâ
You need to set a clear intention. You need to know what exactly you want, and make a point of planning for it, and actually do something about it.
Itâs the same for whatever you want in life. First, you need to know what you want. And what you donât want. And then NOT spend precious years of your life âwishing things were betterâ, âthinking that one day maybeâ, âif onlyâŠ.â, or, the real killer: âit is what it is - đ±!!!â.
As a veterinarian, you can come clear with yourself, and set an intention to decide to find a way to enjoy your job, no matter what. You can set the intention to set up your life in a way that youâll never feel trapped, or powerless, or suffocated by your profession.
Once you set the intention, and start looking for ways to fulfil it, your brain will start coming up with ideas and solutions, and a bit of out-of-the-box-thinking. But this can only happen if you open up the door to possibilities. If youâre thinking that âwell, this is just the way it is, I donât HAVE to love my job and my lifeâ, then youâll fulfil that thought and keep living the same life.
Once you start making changes, for example experimenting with different working hours, or working on becoming more confident in surgeries, or dipping your feet in a new speciality, youâll see what works and what doesnât, and slowly youâll make your way to the life you really want to live.
It doesnât happen in a day. Itâs taken me several years of adjustments and work on myself and a LOT of trials and fails! But if youâre willing to take the risk of leaving your comfort zone (as a friend put it: âswimming in a sea of mediocrityâ) I promise you, it is 100% possible to live the dream life as a veterinarian or anything else, live that life you dreamt about as a kid.
So how do you ACTUALLY do it? Let me break it down for you:
1) Brainstorm all the crazy ideas and dreams about your life you donât even dare to think about right now (Travelling, being amazing at surgeries, have more free time, love your job, specialise in orthopaedics, move house, all of it).
2) Look at everything, and choose a few youâll prioritise for now. Then create a plan for when you want to have fulfilled these ideas and dreams.
3) Now, brainstorm HOW youâre going to do it. Go all in, be daring and playful, and see what your brain comes up with. Then pick the most logical steps and map them out so you know WHEN what has to happen
4) Be willing to adjust along the way and scrap whatever doesnât work for you. I thought I wanted my own veterinary clinic; turns out I donât but HECK, did I learn a lot along the way!!
