If I could just catch up, then I can breathe again...
I think one of the reasons I actually like housework (although you wouldn’t think it if you saw my house - OR asked anyone in my family 😇 🤣), is that you just do it, and then it’s DONE. You can tick the boxes, you have actually FINISHED something!!
Most of us have a never ending list of stuff we “need” to do, and we overwork with the hope we will feel better “if we could just catch up”. 🥵
Truth is, if you ever managed to finish everything, your brain would come up with something else.
Since primary school, we’ve always had a clear goal to get through exam after exam in order to get to where we are now.
Now, our brains struggle to find out what’s most important and urgent, as we don’t have anybody to tell us exactly when and how to do things.
In that way, we are fruitlessly treating life as if it was school. We hustle endlessly to re-find the satisfying feeling of “having finished the homework of the week” or “studied what we needed for the exam” (although, to be honest, for me, at vet school that already never felt good enough). 🤓
The bad news is you’ll never achieve that feeling from finishing everything, because it’s impossible to finish everything that life throws at you. Unless you live in a cave by yourself, living off dandelion roots...
The good news is you can PRACTISE feeling completed, no matter how big the list is growing in the background. You can DECIDE how much you want to do in a day, and everything else gets scheduled for later, or maybe you decide you don’t even want to do it at all.
Right now, your life may seem complicated and that you’ve got a lot going on, and you don’t even want to TRY to truly look at it all and get a perspective because it seems overwhelming.
But it can be simple and easy. Don’t wait for “when I catch up” in order to feel calmer, because you’ll likely never fully catch up. Decide how you want to feel now, regardless of what’s going on around you. And, surprisingly, being calm and grounded will make you finish your tasks quicker anyway!!
