How do you show up for your shifts in the veterinary profession? 🕺🏻 🏃🏻‍♀️

Have you ever come into a room and felt an energy that was “negative” or “draining”? And you immediately tuned into how everyone else was feeling, and lost your zing? 😵‍💫

I’ve come unto shifts where the other staff had some sort of drama going on, and I could FEEL the vibes coming from them, and not in a good way. It used to worry me immensely, I would feel drained and my mood would dip to their level, making us all miserable together. It sure made me fit in with “the tribe”, but it didn’t feel good, and interfered with my mental state for the whole shift.

I think in our profession, because we’re highly empathetic people, we tend to struggle when others are in a negative mindset. This also goes for our personal relationships (why is our partner so quiet today??), dinners with friends (let’s all get depressed together about the recession), etc.

WE think that however everyone else is feeling WILL determine how we feel and think. That we have no control over the “energy in the room”. It’s a human reaction automatically to fit in with however everyone else is doing. 🫠

What I know now is that we can arrive at our shift, read the room, and STAY firmly in who we are and how we want to show up.

Maybe you WANT to stand around and bitch about the world in general for the evening. If that’s what you feel like doing, absolutely do it! Sometimes it’s the BEST to complain together!🤷🏻‍♀️

But don’t do it because you think you HAVE to. I just want to offer that you make the conscious decision of how you want to spend your shift, your day, your night, and how you want to reflect this to the world.

I love coming into my shift with a powerful energy. Feeling like I’ve got springs in my trainers, and am carrying a bright light, illuminating every room I walk into. 💃 And it doesn’t take more energy from me than if I come in dragging my feet, it’s actually the opposite.
