Hey - struggling to make a decision? Read this!

Are you feeling stuck around a decision right now?

Being in indecision is EXHAUSTING!!

If your brain is constantly bouncing between options and never reaching a conclusion, you can end up feeling completely drained, and in the end you might be unhappy with your decision because you just do whatever to avoid thinking about it anymore!

There are 2 big pillars in decision making I want to teach you so you can move on and make your decision RIGHT NOW.

First of all, actually, you could just DECIDE right now, move on and not even finish this post. That is totally an option!!

Ok, so if you’re reading on, I’m assuming you’re still not decided.

I want to teach you that no matter what you choose, there is no RIGHT or WRONG decision.

Whaaaat?!!

There is just THE decision you make! And you make it the right one.

The only reason someone could think “Oh, that was a bad decision” is in hindsight. And you’ll never know what “could” have happened.

Say you have to choose between driving or flying somewhere. End up driving, and have an accident. “DOH, I should have taken a plane!”. You don’t know if that’s true! You could have gotten on a plane, and then had a thromboembolism!!

The thing is, when we look back at a decision and regret it, we’re totally making up what could have happened if we had chosen A instead of B. You know, butterfly effect and all that.

So, know that there is not right or wrong decision, and just choose, and then decide you’re not going to use hindsight against yourself.

Second, beware of black and white thinking, also called all or nothing thinking.

For example, “I’m feeling burnt out as a vet, and would like to leave the profession, but need the money”. So your options are either to work yourself into the ground, OR not have any money.

When your brain gives you two fairly undesirable options to choose from, of course you don’t want to make a decision, as it’s a lose-lose situation!

If this is the case, you need to break your brain a bit and provoke it to think out of the box.

Ask it for 5 other options:

  • I could ask for a raise and work less hours
  • I could work at another type of vet job (ECC work, specialise..)
  • I could work part time as a vet, and part time something else (I know a vet who’s part time dog trainer)
  • I could work less hours, and lower my lifestyle for a while
  • I could learn to manage my mind and emotions in another way, so I work the same hours, but don’t feel burnt out.

Sometimes, when we’re not used to this exercise, the first 5 options your brain comes up with may be TERRIBLE! Or you’re so used to the black and white thinking that brain rebels against having to come up with something different. This is NORMAL, and don’t let your brain hold you back!

To sum it up, if you’re stuck in indecision right now, then first open your brain up for all the possibilities. Then just PICK one. And decide that is the RIGHT decision, and don’t look back. If you need to change course further on - not a problem! Nothing is cast in stone, but it’s important you practice not beating yourself up for making the “wrong” decision. That is just a made up concept that is completely useless to you, and once you leave the possibility of making “wrong” decisions out of the equations, you’ll move so much faster in your decision making.

In your corner,
